Akkusativ-Präpositionen (Accusative Prepositions) (BEFODUG)

Seven prepositions always take Akkusativ, no matter what follows them — mnemonic BEFODUG: bis, entlang, für, ohne, durch, um, gegen.

bis (till) — place, time, occasion

  • Der Zug fährt bis Goa. — place names after bis often take no article.
  • Ich warte bis 8 Uhr / Montag. — time.

*entlang (along) — parallel to

Unusual: entlang comes after its noun, not before.

  • Der Bus fährt die Straße entlang. — (die stays die — feminine, unchanged in Akkusativ.)
  • Ich jogge den Fluss entlang. — (der → den — masculine, changed.)

für (for)

  • Ich kaufe die Tasche für den Vater.
  • Peter braucht Zeit für die Arbeit.

ohne (without)

  • Sie trinkt Kaffee ohne Zucker.
  • Ohne meinen Freund gehe ich nie ins Kino. — meinen confirms Freund is masculine.

durch (through)

  • Die Familie macht eine Reise durch Nordindien.
  • Ich komme in die Klasse durch die Tür.

um (at/around) — time, place (circular)

  • Die Party endet um 11 Uhr. — time.
  • Die Kinder spielen um das Haus. — circular/around.
  • Wir sitzen um den Tisch.

gegen (around/against) — time, vs.

  • Das Spiel beginnt gegen 9 Uhr. — approximate time.
  • Heute gibt es ein Spiel: Indien gegen Pakistan. — vs.
  • Ich nehme Tablette gegen Fieber. — "against" extended to medicine: for.
  • Das Auto fährt gegen den Baum. — against, into (impact).

Merke (Note)

entlang is the odd one out here — everywhere else in BEFODUG, the preposition comes first; entlang comes after its noun. All six of the others (bis, für, ohne, durch, um, gegen) come before, like a normal preposition.

um and gegen both translate as "around," but differently: um is precise/circular (around the table, sitting in a ring) or an exact time; gegen is approximate (around 9 o'clock, roughly) or means "against."

See Akkusativ for the underlying der→den/ein→einen/ mein→meinen pattern these prepositions trigger.
