Dativ-Präpositionen (Dative Prepositions)

A set of prepositions that always take Dativ, no matter what follows.

aus (from) — nationality, out of, made of

  • Ich komme aus Indien. — nationality/origin.
  • Ich nehme mein Handy aus der Tasche. — out of; der confirms Tasche's Dativ feminine form.
  • Der Stuhl ist aus Metall. — made of.

mit (with/by) — transport

  • Ich gehe ins Kino mit meinen Freunden. — with; Freunden shows the Dativ-plural noun ending, on top of meinen.
  • Ich fahre mit dem Fahrrad / Auto / Motorrad / Zug.
  • Ich fahre mit der S-Bahn / U-Bahn. — der confirms both are feminine.

nach (after/to) — city, country, home, time

  • Ich fahre nach Berlin / Hause.
  • Ich suche im Internet nach dem Unterricht. — after.
  • Es ist zehn nach acht. — time — same colloquial method as Uhrzeit, any hour.

seit (since/for) — duration

  • Ich lerne Deutsch seit einem Monat / Juni.
  • Ich wohne in Pune seit 5 Jahren / Geburt. — Jahren: the same Dativ-plural noun ending as Freunden.

zu (to) — everything else

  • Ich gehe zum Bahnhof / Institut. — zum = zu + dem.
  • Ich gehe zur Uni / Post / Schule / Party. — zur = zu + der, confirms all four feminine.
  • Ich gehe zu meiner Schwester. — meiner confirms the Dativ feminine possessive (mirrors der/einer/keiner).
  • *Ich gehe zu Fuß. — idiom: on foot.
  • *Ich bin zu Hause. — idiom: at home (state, not motion — contrast with nach Hause below).
  • *Ich arbeite/lerne von zu Hause. — idiom: from home.

Merke (Note): zu Hause (at home) vs. nach Hause (to home)

Two different idioms for "home", depending on whether you're describing a location or a destination: zu Hause = at home (no motion — "Ich bin zu Hause"), nach Hause = (to) home (motion toward — "Ich fahre nach Hause"). von zu Hause = from home.

bei (at/while) — workplace, someone's place

  • Ich arbeite bei Telco. — workplace.
  • Ich wohne bei meinen Eltern. — at someone's place; meinen confirms the Dativ plural possessive (mirrors keinen).
  • Ich höre Musik beim Frühstück. — while; beim = bei + dem.

von (from/of) — time, profession

  • Ich komme von Deutschland.
  • Ich lerne Deutsch von Montag bis Freitag. — time range.
  • Ich bin Studentin von Beruf. — profession.
  • Das Auto von meinem Freund ist neu. — of; meinem confirms the Dativ masculine singular possessive (mirrors einem/keinem).
  • Ich komme von zu Hause. — idiom: from home.*

*gegenüber (opposite)

Like entlang (Akkusativ), gegenüber is a postposition — it comes after its noun, not before.

  • Mein Haus liegt dem Supermarkt gegenüber. — opposite the supermarket.

"to" (zu/nach/ins) — which one?

Wort Wann
nach city, country, or Haus (nach Hause = "(to) home")
ins kino, Büro, Theater, Konzert, Schwimmbad, Stadion
zu everything else

Merke (Note)

gegenüber joins entlang as the second postposition seen so far — both break the usual preposition-before-noun order. And ins here isn't a random list: kino/Büro/Theater/Konzert/Schwimmbad/Stadion are all neuter nouns, which is exactly why "ins" (in + das) fits every one of them.
