Konjunktionen (Conjunctions) — ADUSO¶
Five conjunctions join two independent clauses without disturbing either one's word order — mnemonic ADUSO: Aber, Denn, Und, Sondern, Oder.
Regel (Rule): Position 0¶
These conjunctions sit in "position 0" — they don't count as taking up a sentence position at all. The clause right after one still starts fresh with its own subject in position 1 and its verb in position 2, exactly as if the conjunction weren't there.
Die fünf Konjunktionen (The Five Conjunctions)¶
| Wort | Bedeutung |
|---|---|
| aber | but (1st clause +, 2nd clause −) |
| denn | because |
| und | and |
| sondern | but/rather (1st clause −, 2nd clause +) |
| oder | or |
Beispiele (Examples)¶
Both mean roughly "but", but they're not interchangeable — aber contrasts a positive first clause with a negative second one; sondern does the reverse, and specifically corrects a negated first clause with the true alternative ("not X, but rather Y"). You can only use sondern after a nicht/kein clause.
