Personalpronomen (Personal Pronouns)

Regel (Rule)

German has three words for "you": du (one person, informal), ihr (several people, informal) and Sie (formal, one or many). Choosing the wrong one is the most visible beginner mistake, so it is worth getting right early.

  • Woher kommen Sie? — Where do you come from? (a stranger, formal)

Ausnahmen (Exceptions)

Formal Sie is always capitalised, wherever it appears in the sentence. Lower-case sie is "she" or "they" — the capital letter is the only thing separating them.

Formal Sie covers one person or several — it's the same word either way, mapping to Marathi आपण. Informal du (one person) and ihr (several people) are two different words in German, matching Marathi तू / तुम्ही and तुम्ही सगळे.

Merke (Note)

sie / Sie / sie are three different words that look the same. The verb ending and the capital letter tell them apart: sie ist (she is), sie sind (they are), Sie sind (you are, formal).
