Präsens (Present Tense) — regelmäßige Verben (Regular Verbs)¶
Regel (Rule)¶
Take the stem (the infinitive minus -en) and add the ending for the subject — the same six endings for every regular verb.
Tabelle (Table): Endungen (Endings)¶
| Pronomen | Endung |
|---|---|
| ich | -e |
| du | -st |
| er / sie / es | -t |
| wir | -en |
| ihr | -t |
| Sie / sie | -en |
Tabelle (Table): durchgeführte Beispiele (Worked Examples)¶
| kommen (Stamm: komm) | wohnen (Stamm: wohn) | |
|---|---|---|
| ich | komme | wohne |
| du | kommst | wohnst |
| er / sie / es | kommt | wohnt |
| wir | kommen | wohnen |
| ihr | kommt | wohnt |
| Sie / sie | kommen | wohnen |
Beispiele (Examples)¶
- Wie heißen Sie? — Ich heiße Darshna.
- Woher kommen Sie? — Ich komme aus Indien.
- Wo wohnen Sie? — Ich wohne in Pune.
- Welche Sprachen sprechen Sie? — Ich spreche Englisch, Hindi, Marathi und Deutsch.
- Was essen Sie? — Ich esse Burger / Pasta.

Merke (Note)
The rule holds across every verb above — including essen and
sprechen, both irregular elsewhere (du isst, du sprichst) —
because that irregularity only ever touches the du/er forms, never
ich, wir, ihr, or Sie/sie. machen and lernen follow
the same pattern too, though only one half of each was shown in class so far
(Was machen Sie? and, separately, Ich lerne Deutsch).
See Das Verb „sein" for the one verb this rule does not apply to.
